On 18 August 1968, Rilindja published the front-page article “Without Self-Determination, No Equality,” which referred to discussions between communist political leaders in Gjakova/Đakovica. The statement is considered to have inspired Albanian students in Pristina to found the Student Committee, which served as the primary body for organizing the 1968 student demonstrations. While student demands in other SFRY republics were mostly of a social nature, focusing on criticizing bureaucratization of the Party, student demonstrations in Kosovo were not considered solely socially motivated. Due to the demands for “self-determination as well as a Republic,” the 1968 student demonstrations in Kosovo took on a nationalist character, a fact confirmed by Selatin Novosella, an organizer of the 1968 student demonstrations.
