In 1990, the Archive of the Institute of Party History of Soviet Lithuania was closed and transformed into the Lithuania’s Society Organizations Archive in 1991. It also incorporated the collections of the former archive.

During the Soviet period, the Archive of the Institute of Party History was closed to the public, and even to researchers. The situation changed after its reorganisation: the collections became available to the public and researchers.
This changed the way the study of the Soviet period developed in Lithuanian historiography. On the other hand, researchers and the public received an opportunity to learn more about the activities of various opposition activists, groups and parties, and government policy towards this activism.
