Zygmunt Błażek is an electrician by background and for many years he worked in the electric plants in Gdansk. From the beginnings in 1980 he was engaged in the Solidarity movement, where he was leading a secret group founded to transfer underground publications. They also painted graffitti and political slogans on the walls. Since 1981 Błażek was one of the organisers of the Solidarity's radio-telephone connection. He was frequently arrested and persecuted. During the martial law he was kept in internment in Strzebielinek, where he co-organised secret communication line between political prisoners.

Błażek took numerous photographs by himself and gathered a big archive during his activities in Solidarity. They are now a part of Photographic Collection of European Solidarity Centre in Gdansk. He also donated numerous documents and some historical objects from the Strzebielinek Internment Camp.
