Varieties of Religious Dissent Ad-hoc Collection at CNSAS

The collection reflects the variety of religious dissent in communist Romania, and illustrates the underground religious practices and overt religious oppositional activities from the late 1940s until the 1980s. The collection comprises, on the one hand, documents and other cultural artefacts created by various religious denominations and confiscated by the Securitate and, on the other hand, documents created by the secret police. The latter illustrate the intense surveillance and the repressive policies of the secret police directed towards those religious activities that opposed the policies of the communist regime in Romania.

Various documents of Lithuanian KGB departments

The collection consists of documents from various KGB departments, found in its rooms and offices in 1991. This material gives good information about the last days of the KGB: what kind of files were on the desks, on the shelves and in the cupboards of KGB officers.

Viktoras Petkus Collection

The collection consists of material about violations of the rights of national minorities and deportees, and people persecuted for anti-Soviet activities, as well as documents about samizdat publications and the persecution of believers.

Zbigniew Galicki Photographic Collection

Zbigniew Galicki collection consists of several thousand negatives taken in the 1980s. Since 1982 every Thursday at 7 PM Galicki photographed holy masses and people participating in them, but also various meetings, lectures, performances that took place after church services. Many important key oppositon leaders can be found in these pictures. According to priest Jancarz, the pictures are black and white because of the colours of the reality.

Áron Márton Memorial Collection in Alba Iulia

The Áron Márton Memorial Collection in Alba Iulia contains the materials that represent the most complete coverage of the bishop’s life and activity, which offers countless proofs of individual courage and spirit of sacrifice, in the light of his official and private correspondence carried on with the Holy See, the Romanian public authorities, and private persons, and insight not only into his struggle for the survival of the Church and the Catholic faith, but also into the details of the fight for minority and human rights in the twentieth century.
